This third volume of the Selected Proceedings of the AATF Convention reflects the great variety of of papers presented at our annual Convention in 2012. We are delighted to make these excellent papers available, demonstrating once again the American Association of Teachers of French commitment to scholarship and teaching, as well as its continual engagement in celebrating the French language and French-speaking cultures around the world.

To honor and highlight the Windy City, site of the 2012 AATF Convention, we are delighted to open this volume with an article on the first written traces of Chicago history, which were captured in the French language. The second paper analyzes the educational system in Algeria and its ideological linguistic choice of classical Arabic as its official language. All other papers feature a focus on the classroom, arguing for the use of Francophone film and poetry as a source of multicultural exposure and as a way to emphasize critical and analytical thinking, and introduce key notions about history, literature, and French and Francophone contemporary culture. This is a multifaceted volume which truly highlights the dedication and commitment to scholarship shown by our colleagues in higher and K-12 education.

We are especially thankful to all who supported this project, those who presented at the Convention, and those who submitted their work for publication. Last, but not least, we are especially grateful for our Editorial Board’s hard work, judicious comments, and dedication.
